HYUNG ZINES is a set of booklets illustrating Rhee Taekwondo patterns (Hyung) from 10th kup (white belt) to 1st dan (black belt).
Patterns is an essential part of training. To move through the ranks, students must remember all previous patterns up to their own grade. The huge need for reference inspires me to compile them all into a compact set, easy to pull out and flip through.
I also created these from my own appreciation of the Arts. I hold a deep fascination observing these techniques. Each movement is so efficiently designed and serves a purpose. In design terms we call it “form follows function”.
During Covid-19 lockdown period, I had a lot of time at home and was missing taekwondo training dearly! The idea came one day when I was roughly sketching the patterns on long strips of paper and laid them out next to each other. Finished sets were sent to my taekwondo friends to help them practice during quarantine.
